![]() Adjustment of the slit size on the Light Sensor mask gives the resolution required to see detail in the interference patterns. Distance graph is plotted in real time, showing the connection between the intensity pattern and the actual laser pattern. PASCO Advantage: Since the Linear Translator tracks the position of the Light Sensor, it is not necessary to move the Light Sensor at a constant speed. In this lab, students will investigate diffraction and interference of laser light from the grooves in a CD and DVD. Differences and similarities between interference and diffraction patterns are examined. These measurements are compared to theoretical values. The purpose of this experiment is to examine the diffraction pattern formed by laser light passing through a single slit and verify that the positions of the minima in the diffraction pattern match the positions predicted by theory. Also, the distances between interference maxima for two or more slits are measured. The distances between the central maximum and the diffraction minima for a single slit are measured by scanning the laser pattern with a Light Sensor and plotting light intensity vs. As one wavelength light (from a laser) passes through slits or blockages, near the laser and glows more than one metre away on a screen. These patterns are then examined for similarities and differences. To measure wavelengths, we need a device that can split a beam of light up into different wavelengths. Diffraction: The effects of diffraction of light were first carefully observed and characterized by Francesco Maria Grimaldi, who also coined the term diffraction, from the Latin diffringere, 'to break into pieces', referring to light breaking up into different directions. You will find it useful to use a ruler to mark the spot centers along a straight line. Continue to mark the centers of the spots, 10 each to the right and left of the central spot. Diffraction effects are important when the size of the opening is comparable to or less than the wavelength. Identify the central bright spot, and carefully mark the center of the spot. ![]() Interference and diffraction patterns from laser light passing through various single-slits and multiple-slits are scanned and plotted in real time. The word diffraction refers to the spreading out of waves after passing through a small opening (Figure 1). ![]()
